History, Culture, and Architecture
Take a trip to Austria, seat of the former Hapsburg empire, where you will land in Vienna, home to a myriad of international organizations! Tour the city center, visit Mozarthaus, take an evening cruise down the Danube river, explore the Imperial Palace Schloss Schönbrunn, see Klimt's artwork, and volunteer in the city! En route to Salzburg, travel through the Wachau valley where you will eat lunch in a charming smaller city then view the UNESCO world heritage site of Melk Abbey and enjoy its spectacular baroque architecture.
Once arriving in Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, tour the city and enjoy a "Best of Mozart" concert at the medieval Hohensalzburg Fortress. Follow that up with a day trip to an historic salt mine at Salzwelt and take a raft trip across the mystical salt lake before traveling to Berchtesgaden, a Bavarian mountain retreat. There, students will tour Hitler's Eagle's Nest before travelling to Lake Königssee, a gorgeous natural Bavarian gem that is the cleanest lake in Germany! After free time in Salzburg, students will travel to the Neuschwanstein Palace, and have lunch in Schwangau!
Arriving in Munich, students will have a tour of the city and eat at the famous Hofbrauhaus. The following day, students will embark on a solemn journey to Dachau, where they will tour the concentration camp and learn its history before spending free time in Munich to enjoy the English Garden or one of many museums or historical sites before a final evening meal in a Bavarian cellar restaurant!

- How can we better learn about the history and contributions of the Hapsburg dynasty and the Austro-Hungarian empire? What happened in these areas during World War II? What role do the Viennese international organizations play in global governance in the 20th century?
- What unique artistic, musical, and cultural contributions (including to modern psychoanalysis) were made in Austria and Germany?
- How can we create an appreciation for various architectural styles, from neo-Romanesque/Byzantine/gothic, to medieval, baroque, and contemporary?
