Core Values Presidential Election

Kimberly Formisano, Head of Lower School

The election is around the corner, and 4th and 5th grade students have been diligently engaging in classroom discussions about the ideals of democracy, the election process, and the importance of voting. They have also explored and debated the significance of each Core Value, ultimately deciding which they felt was the most important.

In the 2020 Core Value Election, Lower School students elected Seezer Be Honest, who ran on a platform of honesty, as the most important Core Value. This year, the fourth graders have chosen to support the incumbent once again, while the fifth graders have selected R.E. Spectacles as their candidate, advocating for the value of respect.

Fourth and fifth grade students are developing their platforms now and will soon share with the community why they believe their candidate’s Core Value is the most important. Over the next few weeks, supporters of Seezer B. Honest (our fourth graders) and R.E. Spectacles (our fifth graders) will campaign throughout campus on behalf of their candidates. The Lower School community will start to see signs and posters up in the buildings with slogans and campaign promises. Students will also prepare speeches to secure votes for their candidate. Ballots and ballot boxes designed by fourth and fifth graders will be distributed to PK - 3 classrooms before the voting day. Meanwhile, other LS classes will learn more about the election process and the importance of voting. Students will discuss the differences and similarities between our Core Values election and a real presidential election.

On November 1st, fourth and fifth grade students will give speeches and presentations on behalf of their candidates during LS Share. After the presentations, students will return to their classrooms to vote for the candidate they feel best represents the most important Core Value. We will announce the results by the end of the day.

You can feel the excitement building in the Lower School as Seezer B. Honest and R.E. Spectacles vie for the esteemed title of Core Values President. Keep an eye out during drop-off in the mornings; you may see Seezer or R.E. supporters campaigning to get the votes from LS constituents!
