LOWER SCHOOL FAQ

  • Is there an age requirement for PK and K?

    Yes. Applicants to Pre-Kindergarten must be four years old by September 1; Applicants to Kindergarten must be five years old by September 1.
  • How do I schedule a tour and interview?

    To schedule a tour or interview create a Ravenna Hub account. After you have created a student profile, navigate to the School Directory and choose to explore or apply to Brimmer and May School. From there you will be able to see all the application steps that are part of the process including Campus Tours and Interviews. 

    A parent/guardian interview is required for students applying for grades PK-5. Students applying for the 5th grade attend the campus visit with their parents in order to complete their student interview and student assessment. Student assessments for grades PK to 4 are completed on the Friday prior to Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend in January.
  • Where is the Admissions Office and where do we park?

    The Admissions Office is in May Hall (96 Middlesex Road), a brown shingle-style house on campus. There are clearly identified visitor parking spots behind the building. If those spaces are occupied, you may also park on the street for up to two hours. After you park, please ring the front door buzzer and someone will greet you!

    Please do not park in any numbered spot in our lots, as those are assigned parking spaces.
  • When is the Application due?

    All applications materials need to be submitted through your Ravenna account on January 15. Additionally, students for the Lower School need to complete a student assessment. We host the in-person student assessment for grades Pre-K to 4 on the Friday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend. You can register for this through Ravenna. We highly recommend that you begin the application process as early as October.
  • What are you looking for in a candidate?

    We are looking for students who demonstrate curiosity, enthusiasm for learning, and a willingness to engage actively in both academic and extracurricular pursuits here at Brimmer, fostering a vibrant and supportive environment within our community.
  • Is financial aid available?

  • Do students come from a limited set of prior schools/daycares and neighborhoods?

    No. Brimmer is fortunate to be a school in which families throughout Boston, the Metrowest, and beyond come together. Students join the Brimmer community having experienced a diverse range of prior schools and daycares.
  • What do the extended day & camp options look like at Brimmer?

  • What can I expect during the parent interview?

    This is an opportunity to share more about your student’s interests, academic experiences, information about educational testing (if applicable), their extracurricular engagements, and your hopes for them in their next school.   • What transportation options are available?

  • What does it mean to be placed in a waitpool?

    When a student is placed in the waitpool, it means that we may not be able to offer them a space. After April 10, we will know how much space is available. If at that time, we still cannot offer a space, families in the waitpool may choose to remain there during the spring and summer months. The Admissions Office will contact a family if a space becomes available, assuming they requested to stay in the waitpool.
  • Does Brimmer and May assist international students with I-20 forms?

    Brimmer is fortunate to welcome students and families from all around the world who enrich our community. Brimmer does support I-20 forms for students in K-12. For students in grade Pre-K to 8, we require students to be living with their parent(s) while attending school. Brimmer is not a boarding school and therefore for students in grades Pre-K to 8 we do not provide housing, residential arrangements, or allow homestay agreements.
  • Will I get a chance to revisit before I make my decision to attend?

    Yes! There are revisit days offered for accepted Lower School students in early April. There is a parent/guardian coffee and panel for grades Pre-K through 2 and a student and parent/guardian morning event for grade 3 through 5. If accepted, families will be notified of our scheduled revisit days.

  • What standardized testing is required for admission?

    Applicants to the Middle School are required to take the Independent School Entrance Exam. Applicants to the Upper School are required to take the Secondary School Admissions Test. Students should register for these exams online and request that scores be sent to Brimmer (school code #220600 for ISEE and #1860 for SSAT). Please allow our office time for processing. *Educational evaluations may be accepted in lieu of the ISEE and SSAT.

    Yes! There are revisit days offered for accepted Middle and Upper School students in late March/early April. If accepted, families will be notified of our scheduled revisit days. During a revisit day, students will attend classes, meet faculty, and have an opportunity to meet Division Heads. This is a day for students to get the full Brimmer experience before making their final decision.
