I would like to share some ways in which our 4th grade students recently exemplified Brimmer’s guiding principles—being inspired to learn, encouraged to explore, and empowered to lead. At Brimmer, students are regularly given opportunities to develop their voices as problem-solvers, allowing them to take the lead both in and beyond the classroom. The 4th graders showcased these qualities in multiple ways: actively participating in a dynamic math drop-in, demonstrating teamwork and perseverance in their final basketball game of the season, and contributing thoughtful ideas in a discussion on how to improve recess for everyone.
Tuesday began with a lively math drop-in, where parents were welcomed by enthusiastic 4th graders eager to showcase their problem-solving skills. As students worked through challenges, they used vertical workspaces to record their thinking, offering families a firsthand look at how students collaborate and strategize to find solutions. This tool, regularly used in Lower School classrooms, promotes communication and teamwork—skills that were on full display later that afternoon on the basketball court.
That same afternoon, I had the chance to cheer from the sidelines during the 4th grade girls’ final basketball game of the season, and it was fantastic to see how they have grown as a team both on and off the court. Their hard work and dedication were evident, with players who had previously scored just a few points now putting up an impressive 21. While the game didn’t end in a win, the team’s pride in their performance was undeniable. They played with determination, supported one another, and left the court with well-earned smiles. What a terrific way to close out the season!
On Wednesday the Core Values in Action Task Force, made up of 16 dedicated 4th graders, gathered to brainstorm ways to enhance recess. With thoughtful discussion and collaboration, they explored ideas for both the field and playground, jotting their suggestions on post-it notes before diving into an animated conversation. One idea that generated widespread excitement was adding a gaga ball pit—an initiative these determined students are eager to bring to life! Other key themes included the need for more equipment options on the field and clearer rules for the playground, reflecting their commitment to creating a fun and inclusive recess experience for all.
Through each of these experiences, the 4th graders demonstrated their ability to think critically, collaborate effectively, and lead with confidence. Take a look at the ways all of our students will be busy in the next two weeks…there is a lot happening throughout the Lower School!
